HARARE - Hydrogen As the Reducing Agent in the REcovery of metals and minerals from metallurgical waste
Keywords: metals production, hydrogen, carbon free, waste valorization, metal recovery
Goal
HARARE is an H2020 project whose purpose is to demonstrate sustainable pathways to produce non-ferrous metals using hydrogen as an enabler. HARARE is also aiming at removing waste and valorizing materials in carbon free processes. The two major waste streams processed are:
- flash smelter slags from primary Cu production
- bauxite residue (BR) from the aluminium production value chain.
Our role
TeSMeT group has taken responsibility of all the work concerning the recovery of metallic and non-metallic products from the two wastes after their reduction with hydrogen. Electrometallurgical as well as hydrometallurgical processes (leaching, precipitation, solvent extraction) are applied for Al, Cu, Co, Mo, Ni, Sc and REEs recovery.
Duration
From June 2021 to May 2025.
