HARARE Day 2: Experiencing Metallurgy First-Hand at Aluminium of Greece plant
Tesmet at ICSOBA 2025
Continuing its annual presence, Tesmet participated in the 43rd International Committee for Study of Bauxite, Alumina & Aluminium (ICSOBA) Conference, held in Nanning, China, from 26 to 31 October 2025. ICSOBA is widely regarded as one of the foremost global gatherings covering upstream aluminium activities from bauxite to liquid metals. It brings together industry professionals, technology suppliers, researchers and consultants from around the world to exchange ideas and know-how on value‑chain challenges and innovations in sustainability, decarbonisation and circular economy.
During the conference, Tesmet researchers contributed four presentations in the alumina and bauxite residue sessions, reflecting the group’s extensive and long-standing expertise in aluminium industry processes. Danai Marinos presented her work on “Alumina Recovery from Sodium Aluminate Solutions via Carbonation” and a co-authored study on “High‑Purity Alumina Production Prospects from Alternative Raw Materials”, while Elena Mikeli showcased her research on “Enhancing the Sustainability of Alumina Refineries: Exergy Insights from Process Simulation.” In the bauxite‑residue session, Professor Thymis Balomenos, Tesmet’s Research Coordinator, introduced “Pilot Scale Zero‑Waste PB Smelting for Iron and SCM Production”, presenting new pathways for residue valorisation and resource efficiency.
All presentations drew strong interest from the audience and generated engaging discussions. Notably, Danai Marinos and Elena Mikeli were among the recipients of the ICSOBA Student Travel Award, signifying external recognition of their scientific work. Their participation, alongside that of Professor Balomenos, highlights the group’s active role in driving innovation within the global aluminium research community and its ongoing mission to enable a more sustainable, circular and low‑carbon metallurgical industry.
