ScaVanger - Sustainable Supply of Nb, Sc and V from Liquid Waste from TiO2 Plants
Keywords: scandium, Ion exchange, resins, TiO2 pigment wastes, vanadium, niobium
Goal
ScaVanger, an EIT Raw materials co-founded project, aspires to be the first producer of scandium from acid chloride-rich solutions and by-products from TiO2 pigment production, in the EU. Its goal is to ensure a stable, reliable and sustainable supply for scandium (Sc), but also vanadium (V) and niobium (Nb) for the European growing markets.
Our role
In ScaVanger, TeSMeT is focusing on developing innovative methods for extracting Scandium from industrial by-products and producing scandium concentrates via the Ion Exchange technique with the use of various selective functionalized resins. Our group will also perform a short preliminary investigation of by-products for further valorization in the project and will organize a summer school that will include lectures on complex waste handling, processing, metal production, regulations, legislations and environment/societal considerations.
Duration
From May 2018 to June 2023.
